Dr Ella Stengler, Chief Executive of the Confederation of European Waste-to-Energy Plants (CEWEP) has written an article in the Belfast Telegraph about the need for Northern Ireland to catch up with the rest of Europe by maximising the value from our waste. With reference to the various Energy from Waste projects currently in the pipeline she argues that “Northern Ireland would do well not to waste this opportunity.”

Recognising the economic and environmental imperative of viewing waste as a resource, Dr Stengler also points out the costly consequences of non compliance with European Waste Directives, when it comes to diverting waste from landfill.

Costly indeed as recent fines from Europe imposed on Italy and Greece indicate. In the case of Italy they have received fines amounting to €40m with more potentially to follow on their failure to fulfil obligations under the waste directives.
